Biography

Mark Bernet is a lawyer and a partner in the Litigation Practice Group of Akerman LLP. He graduated from the Notre Dame Law School in 1986, where he was a member of the Notre Dame Law Review. His law practice concentrates on complex commercial, probate and business litigation, bankruptcy, and appellate matters in both state and federal court. His clients include local, regional and national banks and financial institutions. He routinely documents commercial and real estate loan workouts, and he also has developed a specialization in the aircraft finance industry. He is also experienced in conducting fraud investigations and recoveries, including tracing and recovering fraudulent transfers of funds and property.

Mark also is a federal equity receiver. He has served as a receiver for over 100 different companies since 2003 in lawsuits brought by state and federal agencies, including state attorneys general, the Federal Trade Commission and the federal Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. As a federal equity receiver, his role is to take control of companies charged with various forms of fraud, shut them down where appropriate, and seek to recover assets for the benefit of the victims of the frauds. Mark has recovered millions of dollars' worth of assets over the years, including cash, yachts, construction equipment, high-end watches and jewelry, artwork, residential and commercial real estate, collectibles, innumerable Mercedes and Porsches, and even a collection of Ferraris.
